An entire state built up around a faux-religious mystery cult literally dreamed up by some quack from Western New York who claimed to be visited by angels in 1820. The angels told him all the other religions were wrong and then handed him the playbook for the right one. He took it and ran with it. And why not? He was unemployed. The polygamy part I thought was reasonable but, of course, some other doofus got rid of it when they moved the whole operation to Utah, where there weren't any women anyway.
